Cougars fall in tournament play

The MVNU men’s soccer season came to an end with a 1-0 loss against Indiana Wesleyan University in the Crossroads League Tournament quarterfinals.

The lone goal of the game came from Tony Aegerter of the Wildcats with just 5:55 left in the first half.

The Cougars led Indiana Wesleyan in shots taken (16-6) and shots taken on goal (5-3).

Wildcats goalkeeper Lucas Fancello was credited with five saves and a shutout. MVNU’s goalkeeper junior Adam Miller finished the game with two saves.

“Our guys played really hard,” Cougars coach Andrew Belleman said. “They did what we asked them to do and it just didn’t fall for us today.”

The Cougars and Wildcats split their regular season play. IWU defeated MVNU 1-0 Sept. 1 and the Cougars took down the Wildcats at Indiana Wesleyan 2-1 on Oct. 1. MVNU finishes the season 12-4-3.

MVNU senior Enrique Salazar said the Cougars played hard and left it all on the field, but credited Indiana Wesleyan for their “tough” play.

“It was a hard-fought game,” Salazar said. “They play hard and always play us tough.”
