Volleyball grabs three more victories

October 31, 2016

The MVNU volleyball team (28-4) swept all three opponents last week, beating out Goshen College (25-19, 25-20, 25-18), Ohio Christian University (25-23, 25-11, 25-14), and Bethel College  (25-9, 25-9, 25-15).

Tuesday against Goshen, sophomore Kristen Osborn powered MVNU offensively with 16 kills. Senior Annelise Rohrer added 15 kills.

Rohrer led the Cougars with 16 kills Thursday against Ohio Christian, and four Lady Cougars recorded double-digit digs. Osborn led the Cougars defensively with 20 while Ashley Gingerich picked up 19, Rohrer tallied 17 and senior Bridget Troyer scooped up 12.

“Ohio Christian played extremely good defense in the first game. It was very competitive,” said Cougars coach Paul Swanson. “After that, we made some adjustments and that really worked well in games two and three.”

The Cougars’ victory also marked Coach Swanson’s 1,100th career win.

The victory came on senior night, when the lady Cougars honored setters Carolyn Beatty and Bridget Troyer and outside hitter Annelise Rohrer.

“Certainly by evidence on the court they’re outstanding players. Each of them is very unique and has unique talents,” Swanson said of his three seniors.

The seniors are great on the court and are “awesome people” off the court, Swanson said.

“You couldn’t ask for better people to be in your program,” he said.

The Lady Cougars (28-4) picked up their 16th conference win with a victory over Bethel College on Saturday, giving MVNU a season-sweep of all Crossroads League teams other than Indiana Wesleyan.

Rohrer again led the Cougar attack with 15 kills, followed by Kristen Osborn with 8.  Gingerich led the Cougars defensively with 17 digs.

“We did a good job of being consistent in our play and working together as a team,” Osborn said.

The Cougars will travel to Ohio Wesleyan University Tuesday night to take on the Battling Bishops at 7 p.m.

“It will be a great opportunity to work on our consistency against a good Ohio Wesleyan team on Tuesday before we start tournament play,” Osborn said.
