The 2008 MVNU Men’s soccer team was inducted into the Wall of Fame over homecoming weekend. The men’s team was inducted during halftime of the Men’s basketball game against Ohio Christian.

Caption: The 2008 Men's soccer team was inducted into the Wall of Fame on November 15, 2019.

This 2008 team had the greatest run in program history going deep into the national tournament. The 2008 Cougars had high hopes going into the season with several players returning. The team would finish with a record of 17-5-2. They went 7-1-2 in the American Mideast Conference (AMC) and made it all the way to the conference championship game where they would lose to Notre Dame (Ohio) 2-1.

Their performance throughout the season earned them an at large bid to the national tournament. The Cougars hosted the first tournament game and won over Lee University (Tenn.) 2-0. They would advance to the next round and face Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) and pick up another victory winning 1-0. They would then advance to...

The MVNU soccer and lacrosse stadium has seen several deadline extensions due to one major unforeseen circumstance.

James Smith, Vice President of University Relations, is overseeing the project. Smith said, “Excavation is complete for the turf field... and the pad has been laid.” The pad, which the turf will eventually lay on top of, has been too wet to lay the turf due to the extensive rain observed this summer. The months of January through August were the wettest on record in the United States, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The rain seen every two to four days has forced Smith and his team to pursue a stabilization project, instead of waiting it out, to speed up the process of completing the turf. The process will “add a concrete mixture to the pad.” The mixture will allow the turf company to resume their work which started back up on September 16th.

Although the process will resume, it looks unlikely that the field will be complete by the end o...

MVNU men's soccer is off to a hot start this season.

Head coach Zach Ganzburg has entered his third season with the Cougars, leading them to an early 4-1 record. Ganzburg said the great start is due to the “good foundations in place, both in terms of our style, system of play and our culture.” These foundations, although important, were not the only reason the Cougars have started so well. Senior captain Conner Davis said, “The group we have this year is really eager to learn and build off of each other every training session and game. It’s a tight knit group that wants to win.”

The Cougars lost their first game of the season 1-0 to 4th ranked Madonna out of Michigan. Since that first loss the Cougars have won four straight games. The four consecutive wins has expectations running high for the rest of the season, especially as Crossroads League play begins at the end of the month.

Ganzberg said, “The ceiling for this team is high... as we head into Crossroads League play, my hope is th...

The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s soccer team is losing five seniors following their fall season, each with their own significant role, memories and advice to future students and athletes.

First year Head Coach Zach Ganzberg emphasized the seniors’ impact on the men’s soccer program this season.

“I want to commend all of our seniors on being adaptable, motivated, committed to the team and our core values, and staying faithful, even during adversity,” Ganzberg said.

Adam Miller, majoring in integrated social studies, has played a key role all four years of his collegiate career as the starting goalkeeper. His favorite memory is from his sophomore year when the team beat Bethel College in a penalty shootout.

“It was a crazy cold game and we scored to send it to overtime with 28 seconds left. Then we won in penalty kicks,” Miller said.

Miller is going to miss practicing an...

The MVNU athletic department announced the hire of new men’s head soccer coach Zach Ganzberg last week.

Ganzberg brings his experience as the Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the Bethel College men’s soccer team.

During his three years in Mishawaka, Indiana, Ganzberg recruited, handled compliance-related issues, led training session preparation and execution, and made in-game tactical decisions.

Ganzberg, a 2010 Bethel graduate, recorded 12 goals and six assists during his senior season, leading the Pilots to a Crossroads League tournament championship.

MVNU Athletic Director Keith Veale said Ganzberg will be a great fit and said he is “excited for the next chapter of MVNU soccer.”

“Zach’s heart to mentor young men throug...

After six years as MVNU men’s soccer head coach, Andrew Belleman announced his resignation, effective at the end of spring semester.

Belleman accepted a position as head coach of the men’s program at Arizona Christian University.

With three young children, Belleman and his wife, Tiffany, were looking to live closer to family. Tiffany’s entire family resides in Arizona.

In exploring their options, Belleman applied to ACU, one of the few faith-based universities in the area.

“It is a seamless fit in terms of the environment I want to be in and work in,” Belleman said.

ACU recently started the soccer program and until this point, Alan Berrios has coached both the men’s and women’s teams. Berrios will now focus solely on the women’s program as Belleman steps in with the men.

“I want to develop a similar culture the...

The men’s soccer team finished the season with a record of 12-4-3 overall and 5-2-2 in Crossroads League play.  The Cougars finished 3rd in the regular conference rankings.

This year the Cougars are sending off five seniors: Taylor Dyson, Tent Chivatanaporn, Daniel Rodriguez, Enrique Salazar-Rodriguez and Dennis Taylor.

Head Coach Andrew Belleman is very proud of this group of players and the leadership they have shown throughout the year.  Their effort and determination have propelled the legacy of the program these past four years, he said.

“This is a group of guys that have shown tremendous perseverance,” said Belleman. “They are experiencing the positive benefits that can happen when you stick with something.  They have all had different paths to get to this point, but if I...

The MVNU men’s soccer team ended the season 12-4-3 after falling to Indiana Wesleyan University 1-0 in the Crossroads League Tournament quarterfinals.

The Cougars secured their trip to the league tournament as the third seed after finishing the conference season winning five games, losing two and drawing two.

Senior forward Enrique Salazar, who was named the 2016 Crossroads League
Offensive Player of the Year, led the Cougars’ 2016 season with 11 total
goals. Salazar was the top scorer in the Crossroads League this season.

Dennis Taylor, also a senior forward, tallied six goals and freshman midfielder Connor Davis led the newcomers, recording seven.

Salazar, junior goalkeeper Adam Miller and freshman defender Gerardo Rivas were given All-Crossroads League First Team Honors for their performances this season.

Leading the offensive attack for the MVNU men’s soccer team is an accomplishment to be proud of, especially after being sidelined from collegiate soccer for over a year.

Enrique Rodriguez-Salazar, a senior forward from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, leads the Cougar offense with 11 goals scored this season.

Introduced to the sport at the age of 14, Salazar often played street soccer in his hometown. He later played for the International School of Tegucigalpa.

Salazar explains his placement at MVNU as “God ordained.”

“Eduardo Barhona, my high school chaplain, came to MVNU looking for professors to teach in Honduras. He met Coach Belleman and gave him my information,” Salazar said.

Salazar came to MVNU as a fr...
