Coming on Strong

The MVNU golf teams are looking forward to their upcoming spring season.

Head coach Mike King is pleased with the team’s growing confidence in their abilities.

“They’re starting to feel like they actually belong in the top part of the league,” King said.

Captain Sam Romine says the team looks “pretty solid.”

“We have four pretty solid players,” Romine said. “Hopefully momentum carries over from last spring.”

Last spring, the team finished second to Taylor University, the top team in the Crossroads League.

Romine says the team has a good shot at a league title this year.

“I’m just excited to get back and play,” he said.

Among the team strengths, King said, is the ability to stay calm under pressure.

The team doesn't “have a tendency to get rattled.”

However, King said his golfers sometimes get in a position to win and then can’t quite finish out, so he hopes to see their hard work pay off with more consistency and strong finishes this spring.

Assistant Coach Brody Harwell said spectators can expect a lot from the seniors, citing their leadership and experience.

Seniors this year are Dylan Bailey, Ethan Doon, Tyler Grate, Seth King and Sean Thomas for the men, and Phoenix Emde for the women.

King said the key players for this season are captains Romine and Kaden Welch and Thomas.

Their spring schedule includes a week at the Orange County National Golf Center in Florida to prepare for tournaments.

The team also has tournaments lined up at some prestigious courses, including Brickyard in Indiana.

Harwell says the tournament in Indiana is the one the team is most looking forward to.
