Lady Cougars pick up a league win and a loss

The MVNU women’s soccer team (9-7) picked up a win and dropped one game last week, falling to nationally ranked (1) Spring Arbor University 2-1 on Tuesday and beating out Goshen College 2-1 on Saturday.

Spring Arbor scored just eight minutes into the game on Tuesday, tacking on another goal with 29:33 left on the clock.

The Lady Cougars were given hope with a goal from senior Emily Heaton in the 76th minute of play. But Spring Arbor held MVNU scoreless in the final 14 minutes to secure the win.

Heaton scored her second goal of the week when she gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead just four minutes into their match against Goshen College.

Ginyce Haywood of the Lady Maple Leafs then tied it up just 12 minutes later. Heaton sealed the deal for MVNU with her second goal of the game in the 45th minute.

“It wasn’t our best performance, but we fought and came out with the win,” senior defender and co-captain Shannon Gwynn said. “We have to come out with more intensity.”

The game against Goshen was Senior Day for the Lady Cougars. The team celebrated the soccer careers of goalkeeper Ashley Flautt, defenders Shannon Gwynn and Olivia Boldoser, midfielders Faith Orecchio, Bethany Bogantz and Emily Heaton and forward Allison Paley.

The Lady Cougars will travel to Lake Winona on Wednesday as they take on Grace College at 7 p.m.

“We have to get pumped. Grace lost some seniors to graduation last year, but they’re always tough,” Gwynn said. “We have to come out with the same level of intensity as we did against Spring Arbor.”
